Should people be able to live wherever they want?
Read the Task, so you know what you're up against, and then
watch the videos, view the maps, and use the resources to complete your
understanding of how plate tectonics affects people around the world. Start to
think about where people live and risks involved.
This site is a framework for you to follow to demonstrate
your learning and thoughts about certain plate tectonic features and events.
You will be given some locations to investigate the dangers
and risks of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis.
This activity follows the IB MYP and Common Core ideals and is
designed for:
- Regents Earth Science students
- sharing your thoughts and learning
- using technology
- creating usable maps
Task
Should people be able to live wherever they want?
Investigate the locations you were assigned to check out. Look at the guidelines below to organize your thoughts (or print out a copy below). Name _______________________ Directions: View the videos. As you view the videos, think of ways that people can control the risks associated with these events. For example, how could we reinforce buildings in areas of earthquake activity? Question: Should people be allowed to live wherever they want? You will need to answer the question with a minimum 700 word response. Use the following guide to help you to construct an answer. Write a short note on each line to give yourself an outline of what to write. Your response will explain, in detail, why you do or do not agree with the question. 1) Many humans live in areas where there are significant risks due to geologic hazards. After viewing the destruction caused by geologic events in the videos, explain what humans can do to make living in these areas safer.
a. Example 1 ___________________________________________
b. Detail supporting example 1 ____________________________________________
c. Example 2 ___________________________________________
d. Detail supporting example 2_____________________________________________
2) Do you agree or disagree with the question ‘should people be allowed to live where they want’? ___________________________________3) Give one reason why you agree or disagree. ____________________________________ 4) Give more detail supporting your reason. ____________________________________________ 5) Give another reason why you agree or disagree. _______________________________________ 6) Give more detail supporting your reason. ____________________________________________ Your response needs to be a minimum 700 words, more is good, less is not (700 words is roughly 2 typed pages, double spaced). If your response is too short, go back and give more reasons why you agree and give more detail to back up your reasons. If you are thorough and thoughtful in your response, you will be able to easily write 700 words. This should be accompanied by your Google Map noting your supporting evidence. |

HINTS, TIPS, & TRICKS: what connections can you make to other subjects? what personal applications and extensions are you thinking about?...write them down in this essay.
ReplyDeleteTo make this more FOCUSED, pick a place that you may want to visit or live that is near a plate boundary (ESRT page 5) and investigate that area using the website links. You may find it EASIER if you pick a role/job and think about it as if you were there (i.e. traveler, resident, business owner (club owner), scientist (seismologist or volcanologist), military, rescue/fire or Red Cross relief, Mayor/Governor...)
